You have now arrived at the historic Starr Gennett Walk of Fame, situated in Richmond’s beautiful Gorge area. We hope you brought a picnic, because this is the perfect spot to take a break and learn more about this stop.
Gennett was a record company and music label in Richmond that flourished in the 1920s. The studio was located on the property of the Starr Piano Company which was one of the nation’s largest manufacturers at the time. Gennett produced some of the earliest recordings of Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Bix Beiderbecke, and Hoagy Carmichael.
In 2007 the Starr-Gennett Foundation began to recognize the most important artists who recorded there with the Gennett Walk of Fame, located along South 1st Street at the Piano Company site. Do you recognize any famous jazz stars? We bet you will!
